4. Spit & Eggs (Air Date: November 28th 2006)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woMPwOEaETc Veronica Mars' third season saw Veronica at college and a darker, more menacing tone to the storylines- including this one: a serial rapist on campus whom had chalked up four victims thus far and was looking at #5. Veronica, no stranger to rape herself (more on that shortly), reacted strongly. A more real, more mature, I suppose you'd say more grown-up Veronica, highlighted in the clip from early on in the episode above, would stop at nothing to bring the culprit into light and to justice. Spit & Eggs, written by series creator Rob Thomas, was a different kind of Veronica Mars episode, ditching the jokes, the quirks and the charisma for a far darker, more serious tone. Veronica, in pursuit of the rapist in this episode, is betrayed by an ally of his and locked in a room, where it appears she herself could end up becoming his next victim. Revealed to be the kind of person who's always in plain sight but never suspected, Veronica very quickly becomes entrenched in a battle for her life as the two criminals in cahoots look to shut her down. Eventually, they are apprehended but not before Veronica has gone through one of the trials of her life. She's faced a few others. Following the conclusion of this storyline, some deftly written touches were played into the end of this episode, including Logan, whom had broken up (again) with Veronica at the top of the episode, deliberately vandalizing a police car to get himself thrown in the same jail cell as the two rapists and the shift towards the season's second major arc: the investigation into the murder of college dean Cyrus O'Dell. To say the least, this episode pulled no punches. Harrowing, dangerous and dramatic, this episode took Veronica some place different and I loved it.
