3. Donut Run (Air Date: January 25th 2006)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJjbp0hpaS4 In the earlier seasons, Veronica Mars was famous for its episodic, standalone mysteries, which Veronica must unravel by the episode's end. Occasionally, these mysteries would tie in with the overall story arc or presiding character arcs that had been ongoing. The pinnacle of this approach occurred with the restart, after the Christmas break in season two. Duncan Kane, brother of Lilly, Veronica's first lover and recurring boyfriend is left holding the baby- literally- after previous lover Meg, pregnant with his daughter, died after giving birth following complications from her injuries during the bus crash. Duncan, facing the prospect of losing his new-born daughter to social services and the relatives of Meg, decides to take his daughter and flee the country, essentially kidnapping her. Veronica is brought in by the FBI and Sheriff Lamb under suspicion of being an accomplice- she is. In fact, Duncan had yet to leave the country, the evidence suggesting he had being previously planted by Veronica, whom deceives everyone, including her father and closest confidant, Keith. The first 3:45 of the linked video show the scene where Keith discovers his daughter's manipulations and confronts her but not before clearing away the evidence that incriminates her as Duncan's accomplice. With Veronica's help, Duncan ultimately is successful in fleeing to Mexico and is only seen once more, briefly, in the entire series. Rob Thomas pitches this episode perfectly, blending the twists and turns of the narrative with the twists and turns of the morality of what both Duncan and Veronica are doing. This entire episode exists as an exercise into examining the psyche of youth and, in spite of whichever side of that particular debate you fall on, made for some captivating TV. Veronica would move on from this to the next stage in her story but in terms of wrapping up the Duncan Kane part of the tale this episode was exemplary.
