8 Cheapest Season Finale Cliffhangers In TV History

5. The X-Files - UFO

The X-Files My Struggle Part 2
Fox

When The X-Files returned to Fox for its 10th season back in 2016, things were never quite the same. The revival had its moments for sure - Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster was an instant fan-favourite - but as a whole it didn't fully click, and that's particularly true of the ending.

Endings are something The X-Files has long struggled with: Season 7 could've been the end, as could Season 9, and so too could the second movie, 2008's I Want To Believe. The same can be said for Season 10, as it wasn't certain whether the show would return again or not, but the ending very much commits to that notion.

My Struggle Part II ends with Mulder slowly succumbing to a virus, and then a UFO arriving and shining its beam down upon them. As end ending to the revival, it's weak. As setup for more, it's very audience baiting. As a potential end for the entire show, it's even more infuriating, because it isn't one. There's no level on which it really works, and it's the best argument out there for the case staying closed all along.
