8 Cheapest Season Finale Cliffhangers In TV History

4. Twin Peaks - How's Annie?

Twin Peaks Season 2 featured both the show's highest highs and lowest lows. David Lynch's reveal of who killed Laura Palmer led to a string of episodes wrought with the kind of surreal tension the master director is known for, but after they were in the can, he left the show in the hands of Mark Frost.

The co-creator did an admirable job, but with the core storyline wrapped up, the proceeding episodes became incredibly goofy (even more so than usual), relying on tired TV techniques the series had so far avoided.

Lynch returned for the final episodes, with Season 2's finale seeing Cooper trapped in the Black Lodge, being chased by a demonic doppelganger of himself. By all accounts it was a return to form for the series - until its final moments, anyway. Seemingly escaping, Coop wakes up in his hotel room, walks into the bathroom and looks at the mirror, where he sees Killer BOB staring back at him.

Possessed by the entity, Bad Coop smashes his face into mirror, muttering "where's Annie?" over and over again, with the implication being that Cooper's girlfriend would be the next victim of BOB's rampage.

That lack of any explanation is bad enough, but what makes the cliffhanger even cheaper is how Lynch refused to acknowledge it for years after the show's cancellation, not giving any answers in the film adaptation, Fire Walk With Me, and again ignoring what happened to Annie in the otherwise-brilliant The Return.
