5. Clara Oswald, The Impossible TARDIS
The ongoing mystery surrounding Clara Oswald was the show's dominating arc throughout 2012/13, so much so that in many ways Series 7 was wholly defined by it. When the truth behind "the impossible girl" was finally revealed in The Name of the Doctor, then, it was always going to be loved and loathed in equal measure. Let's face it, it had been built up so much by that point (the Doctor literally alluded to it in pretty much every episode and it was the main reason he invited her aboard the TARDIS in the first place) that it was never going to live up to the expectations that preceded it. It didn't help matters that loads of us had already preempted who she was anyway, owing to the fact that the BBC stupidly revealed, weeks before its transmission, that the finale would be based around the Doctor's timestream. Where's Sherlock when you need him? Still, it didn't stop the rest of the Doctor Who community speculating about who she was and one of the most popular theories was that Clara was a living embodiment of the TARDIS. This wasn't entirely without evidence, too, as the clues were certainly scattered throughout her various appearances. First there was the computer-savvy Oswin who was always one step ahead of the Doctor and then came along the Victorian Clara, a feisty (as overused as that word is) governess with a big heart. Those are all traits that the TARDIS itself possesses and there was the added fact that the police box took an instant disliking to Clara which seemingly suggested that it didn't like encountering itself. It even refused to let her in at one point so it was prepared to go to great lengths to prevent her from stepping aboard.
