For those people watching Game Of Thrones after its live broadcast (and given how easy it is to record programmes and watch them online, that's probably quite a few) the temptation is likely high to skip the show's credits. At almost two minutes long it can feel like a bit of slog (despite the insanely catchy tune), and this is especially noticeable if you happen to be binge-watching.

What many people don't know, however, is that Game Of Thrones' intro actually attempts to aid the potentially confused viewer. Sometimes it can be difficult remembering all of the many characters, locations and story lines going on simultaneously...pay a bit more attention at the start, however, and you might find the opening credits quite useful.

The steampunk-esque map was originally supposed to be used throughout each episode to make it clear where each scene was taking place in the world, but it soon became obvious that this technique damaged the pacing. Nevertheless it's still used in the intro to show the main locations viewers will be visiting in any particular episode, changing from week to week.
