It's no secret that True Detective season 2 had a much rougher time with fans and critics than the first season did, but it still has a few curious things of note, including the use of the Leonard Cohen song Nevermind in the introduction.

The astute viewer might have noticed that the sections of the song used each week actually change, providing a variety of lyrics in tandem with mysterious images. These lyrics are often used to hint at and foreshadow certain plot developments, the most striking of which happens during the seventh episode of season two titled Black Maps And Motel Rooms.

During the episode, James Frain's Kevin Burris kills Paul Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch). In the intro, Cohen sings “and truth that dies” over a picture of Kitsch. The murderous twist of the episode, then, is foreshadowed through Cohen's lyrics. The same thing happens again later, as the lyric "I could not kill, the way you kill" foreshadows Frank's murder of Blake, and plays right over a picture of Vince Vaughn.
