The return of Dr Martin Brenner, the sinister scientist of Hawkins Laboratory, is an unexpectedly puzzling part of season four. Viewers of the show are perplexed that this character has officially returned to help Eleven with the Nina project, despite the fact that he previously died. Or so we thought...

Returning back to the season one finale, Brenner was jumped on by a Demogorgon, and that was the last we saw of him. It was only fair to conclude that he died because he never appeared again until now. Seemingly unscathed and completely alive, Brenner's return raises some serious questions, especially since he died again this season from multiple bullet wounds.

Perhaps he escaped the Demogorgon off-screen in season one, or maybe (though this seems unlikely) he has his own psychic abilities like Eleven. This has undoubtedly impacted the validity of his actual death this season, which, while completely realistic and emotional, has left fans conflicted.

So how is Dr. Brenner still alive after season one? Even after volume two, this question remains untouched, where it may always be.
