1. The Prisoner - 1967

ITV

Bright colours and a wonderful 60s charm accompany this brilliantly crafted series focused on a lone prisoner and his attempts to end his forced incarceration.

Originally broadcast in 1967, The Prisoner centres around a lead character, who we never even learn the name of. The character is deemed to know too much and is drugged and taken to an island to live out the rest of his days away from regular society. The show's creator and star Patrick McGoohan is referred to like the rest of the residents on the island by number only, with himself being known as number six.

The show's seventeen episodes centre around number six's attempts to escape from the island village, all the while battling with the island's rulers and their attempts to find out secrets from him. These include schemes to try and convince him he's a clone who is to be killed and even to hijack his dreams to convince him to share secrets.

The prisoner is visually stunning and had a massive budget, with lots of thought being put into every single prop of every episode, with symbolism throughout alluding to being a prisoner in modern society and the dangers of daring to be an individual in the modern world.

Despite never learning his name, we gradually learn to love number six and the daring attempts he makes to escape his incarceration.
