2. Space 1999 - 1975
The second Gerry Anderson show to appear on the list and one of the few live action shows created by Anderson, Space 1999 follows the adventures of the inhabitants of the moon colony Moonbase Alpha, which is blasted out of Earth's orbit following a tragic accident in episode one.
The first series of the show is truly one of the all time greats, and had a huge budget and production value, with visual effects well up to the standards of its day such as Star Wars. First Broadcast in 1975 and set in the future of 1999, the crew of Moonbase Alpha are at the mercy of the drift of the moon, transporting them close to neighbouring planets which they try and colonise to live on all while encountering many strange creatures and beings.
Space 1999's first season was sadly deemed to dark for an American audience, so for the second series most of the regular cast were fired and the stories included more traditional silly monsters and cheesy plot lines, which was a massive shame and damaged the reputation of the show.
Series one however ponders deep concepts such as the purpose of life and what it means to be human, and remains arguably fresher today than it did on initial broadcast in '75.
