1st Appearance: Everybody Loves Raymond Long before Kevin James was zoo-keeping and mall-copping and making Rob Schneider's brand of comedy seem subtle by comparison, he was just another schlubby, lovable loser on the by-the-numbers family sitcom The King of Queens. Taking up the mantle of John Goodman and Fred Flintstone, James' portrayal of Doug Heffernan was there to remind us that fat guys can end up with beautiful women, but their lives will be hilariously miserable because of it. But actually, Doug Heffernan (who probably originated in rough drafts as Pudgy Gutterson) didn't start out as the comically overweight, perpetually unappreciative husband on King of Queens. No, he first appeared as a comically overweight, perpetually unappreciative husband, and friend to Ray Barone, on Everybody Loves Raymond. It turns out that Ray Romano and Kevin James are pals in real life, and Ray decided to use his show as a launching pad for his friend, thus technically making King of Queens a spin off.
