8 Problems With Torchwood: Miracle Day

1. Practically No Aliens Or Paranormal Stuff

ewe Admittedly, Torchwood has experimented with the absence of aliens before such as the Series One episode in which the antagonists were cannibals and several episodes that focussed on people coping with time displacement and had no real enemy. But these were small one-off episodes. This is an enormous ten part series with a single overarching narrative yet the only remotely alien stuff we get is some kind of parasitic worm that has absolutely no bearing on the plot and gets about half a minute of screentime before Jack blows its head off, and of course the Blessing. Which is somehow worse than no strange creatures at all. The story is way too focussed on the whole €œhumans are b*****ds€ angle and the wider idea of what would happen to a world without death to include an engaging paranormal antagonist. This is the series that gave us Weevils, alien blowfish on cocaine, and psychotic time travellers like Bilis Manger and John Hart. But here there€™s just not enough alien intervention. It would have been easy to work in an alien race somehow, perhaps having them in the background having planned out the Miracle to destabilise the human race to make invading the planet easier. The lack of aliens makes it feel less like Torchwood and more like a totally separate entity. Have any thoughts? Leave a comment...
