8 Reasons Futurama Doesn't Need A Season 8
6. Rick & Morty
Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon's sci-fi comedy has ably filled the gap left by Futurama. It's often a more cynical and harder-edged show, but what it lacks in heart, it more than makes up for in high-concept science fiction ideas. When Futurama comes back, it won't be enough for it to simply replicate what's gone before.
For the show to be successfully revived, it will need to either compete with Rick & Morty or provide a compelling alternative. The emotional heft of Futurama has always been a major selling point, but that's been exhausted over the previous seven seasons. It's a tall order to compete with Rick & Morty's high concept storytelling, but equally it's going to be difficult to do something new when it comes to the central characters.
Futurama's simpler approach to storytelling might work in its favour, as the Rick & Morty mythology is an increasingly dizzying concept. However, simple, episodic storytelling no longer appears to be in fashion.
This isn't to say that the two shows can't co-exist, but it does provide a challenge for the returning Futurama team. To paraphrase Dougie from South Park "Rick & Morty already did it.."
