8 Reasons Futurama Doesn't Need A Season 8
3. Dangerous Nostalgia
It's been a tough few years. As such, it can be a great comfort to sink back into old habits or return to much-loved comfort viewing. There's nothing wrong with that. However, isn't it healthier to revisit some favourite episodes rather than churn out twenty new ones?
Post-COVID, nostalgia has been incredibly lucrative for Hollywood studios. Spider-Man: No Way Home and Jackass Forever have both tapped into the nostalgic fondness that audience members have for a time gone by. It can also be incredibly destructive. Commissioning new episodes of shows that have had their time, or producing sequels, spin-offs, or prequels to film series that have already ended can fundamentally change your understanding of the property.
Not only that, but it makes it incredibly difficult for new, original work to flourish. Audiences are less risk-averse these days, and as studios and streaming services constantly offer up revivals, remakes and sequels, they're only going to retreat further into their comfort zones. As a result, nothing in fiction ever truly ends.
At this rate, your great-great-great-grandaughter will be watching brand new episodes of Futurama in the actual year 3,000.
