8 Reasons The Seinfeld Superbowl Reunion Just Didn't Work

6. Hello, Newman...Goodbye, Newman...

Is two people acting together as shadows of the original characters really a reunion? When we heard "reunion", we wanted a fully fledged reunion with the entirety of the main cast. What we needed was for Jerry to be accompanied by the holy trifecta of supporting leads; George Costanza, Elaine Benes and Cosmo Kramer. In the episodes where for whatever reason a main cast member was missing, it didn't matter how good the episode was, we always noticed and missed the hell out of the absent character. The Chinese Restaurant is one of the best episodes of Seinfeld, if not the best, but it didn't have Kramer, and we most definitely noticed. Just ask Jason Alexander about The Pen and he'll tell you how much he noticed. If the Superbowl reunion were good, I wouldn't have minded the absences of Elaine and Kramer as much, but given the quality of the special, it just added to the disappointment. Additionally, and just to add insult to injury, Newman appears for all of ten seconds. At least when he appeared for ten seconds in the Curb reunion, it was damn funny. This time he talks about food, does some weird laugh and scuttles off, which is a pretty shameful waste of the show's most popular recurring character.
