8 Stories Amazon's Lord Of The Rings Could Tell

4. The War Of The Last Alliance

Sauron Lord of the Rings
New Line Cinema

The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings take place during what is known as The Third Age of Middle-earth, but one of the most significant events in its history came thousands of years earlier, and it was only touched upon in The Fellowship of the Ring film.

During the Second Age, Elves and men banded together to battle the One Ring-wielding Sauron and his forces on the slopes of Mount Doom. For thousands, it would be their final stand against the Dark Lord.

As seen in Fellowship's flashback sequence, the battle comes to an end when Aragorn’s ancestor Isildur cuts the ring from Sauron's finger, ending his physical form. The war, however, is far from over, but that's another story... called Lord of the Rings.

In many ways, The War Of The Last Alliance would have been a more interesting prequel story to tell on screen than The Hobbit, and the TV series should take heed of that. It's a story with many layers and moving parts.

There's a flawed and unpredictable protagonist in Isildur, the formation of the Elf-man alliance to explore and the Mount Doom battle to convert into a bombastic set piece.

This story has everything the showrunners could possibly want from their Lord of the Rings prequel, and it would enrich the movies by revealing more of the events that paved the way for their narrative.
