8 Terrific TV Bottle Episodes

8. How I Met Your Mother - The Limo

To say that How I Met Your Mother liberally uses flashbacks is a gross understatement, to say the least. As such, it becomes much more of a shock when the show buckles down and uses a (relatively) straightforward chronological structure, confined in the back seat (and occasionally roof) of a limousine for the entire episode. Set on New Years Eve, this episode opens with the proposition that every New Years is a well of disappointment waiting to happen. Ted decides to confront this issue head-on by arranging party-hopping plans in the titular Limo. The rest devolves into a series of misadventures as Ted's plans go awry for better and worse. The heart of this episode, however, is in Ted's hopeless devotion to the ideal that they can actually have a good New Year's Eve. At the end of the day, the Limo is the only party worth staying for in this New Years Eve episode. It serves the sitcom exceptionally well be restraining all the gimmicks the writers tend to lean on to heavily. "The Limo" is How I Met Your Mother at its finest - restrained, charming, and with a streak of sincerity that puts it miles above any other modern sitcom.
