8 Times Robin Outsmarted Batman

7. Jason Todd Causes Chaos - Hush

Jason Todd
DC Comics

Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee's Hush arc is one of the most fascinating Batman stories in recent memory. Not only did Hush feature a true who's who of the Caped Crusader and his supporting characters, not only did the story introduce a hugely intriguing new villain, but the tale also brought Jason Todd back from the dead.

The second Robin, Jason had famously been offed back in 1988's A Death in the Family - a fan vote deciding the fate of Todd - yet Hush shockingly saw this fallen hero resurrected.

Hush himself would be revealed to be Bruce Wayne's childhood best pal, Tommy Elliot, although the biggest twist of this story was how readers saw the long-dead Jason back in the fold.

Despite switching places with Clayface for parts of Hush's finale, it would be explained that Jason Todd had been working alongside Hush and The Riddler as part of a greater plan to torment the Dark Knight on every possible level. And for the majority of Hush's 12-issue run, that plan succeeded and played out perfectly.

Every time that Bruce thought he'd solved the mystery of Hush, he'd suddenly be left perplexed as this story took yet another twist. It was masterful, it was brilliant to watch, and it led to Jason coming back as a genius, brutal figure who was a breath of a fresh air to the Bat-books of the day.

Once described as the Swiss Army Knife of WhatCulture, Andrew can usually be found writing, editing, or presenting on a wide range of topics. As a lifelong wrestling fan, horror obsessive, and comic book nerd, he's been covering those topics professionally as far back as 2010. In addition to his current WhatCulture role of Senior Content Producer, Andrew previously spent nearly a decade as Online Editor and Lead Writer for the world's longest-running genre publication, Starburst Magazine, and his work has also been featured on BBC, TechRadar, Tom's Guide, WhatToWatch, Sportkskeeda, and various other outlets, in addition to being a Rotten Tomatoes-approved film critic. Between his main dayjob, his role as the lead panel host of Wales Comic Con, and his gig as a pre-match host for Wrexham AFC games, Andrew has also carried out a hugely varied amount of interviews, from the likes of Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Adrienne Barbeau, Rob Zombie, Katharine Isabelle, Leigh Whannell, Bruce Campbell, and Tony Todd, to Kevin Smith, Ron Perlman, Elijah Wood, Giancarlo Esposito, Simon Pegg, Charlie Cox, the Russo Brothers, and Brian Blessed, to Kevin Conroy, Paul Dini, Tara Strong, Will Friedle, Burt Ward, Andrea Romano, Frank Miller, and Rob Liefeld, to Bret Hart, Sting, Mick Foley, Ricky Starks, Jamie Hayer, Britt Baker, Eric Bischoff, and William Regal, to Mickey Thomas, Joey Jones, Phil Parkinson, Brian Flynn, Denis Smith, Gary Bennett, Karl Connolly, and Bryan Robson - and that's just the tip of an ever-expanding iceberg.
