8 TV Shows That Were Damaged By Their Own Fans
3. Lost Was The Victim Of Its Own Commitment To Mystery
Interestingly, this entry has less to do with writers pandering to fans and more about what fans can do externally to damage a show. When the finale of Lost aired in mid-2010, there was a hugely divided response. Some viewers adored it, some absolutely hated it, and many stopped watching long before it was even on TV.
Ultimately, Lost was treated incredibly harshly in its later years, and it didn't completely deserve it. From the very start the show was primarily interested in the lives of its characters – half of each episode's runtime was literally dedicated to their back story (or future story, or...sideways story).
A huge number of fans, however, were more interested in hearing that the black smoke consisted of nanobots than seeing how Locke became paralysed, or were more outraged by the numbers than Juliet's death. The anger and ridicule this hunger for answers manifested itself in turned many people away from the show and turned other strongly against it, despite the fact it was fairly upfront about what is considered important from the very start. There are still plenty of valid criticisms that should be levelled at the show, but vitriol over unanswered mysteries turned a huge number of people against it.
