8 TV Shows You Had No Idea Were Rewritten By Real Life Events

6. The TARDIS Only Exists Because The Show Had Barely Any Money

When most people think of Doctor Who, they think of the TARDIS: the unassuming blue police box which has become the show's most beloved symbol (it's practically, and even literally in one episode, a character itself).

Which makes it all the more interesting, then, that it almost didn't exist at all. The original plan was for the TARDIS to be a huge, complex spaceship, but the BBC refused to dump enough money into the show in order for the concept to be fully realised.

This forced the writers to come up with the idea that the TARDIS could disguise itself however it needed, but even that allowed the writers to come up with disguises that ate into the budget. The solution was to take a prop from a different set - in this case of a police box - and pretend the disguise feature was broken.
