The idea of the Family Guy versions of the original Star Wars trilogy came about when the makers of the show were doing so many Star Wars jokes that Fox advised they had to clear it with George Lucas. This then evolved, and 'Blue Harvest', 'Something, Something, Something, Dark Side', and 'It’s A Trap' were born.

Seth MacFarlane was essentially given license to use the Star Wars characters in the typical, trademark Family Guy way, but in order to protect the Lucasfilm brand there did have to be certain limitations put on things.

However, the pushback wasn’t nearly as much as was originally expected. When the Family Guy producers first went to Lucasfilm with the idea, they were told they could go ahead with it, with the only initial condition being that the characters had to look exactly as they did in the movies.

Star Wars is one of the biggest movie franchises in the world, and with that comes a certain image that Lucasfilm obviously wanted to remain throughout Family Guy. MacFarlane and co. took this on board incredibly seriously, even down to Lando wearing Han Solo’s clothes instead of his own.
