8 Ups & NO Downs From Star Trek: Lower Decks 5.6 - Of Gods And Angles
8. UP — Square Peg, Round Hole
Get your mind out of the gutter, then put it right back in there, as this is Lower Decks. Innuendo and whatever they were doing on the holodeck aside, Of Gods and Angles is a satirical triumph. It takes all the complex conflict diplomacy we've ever seen in Star Trek and reduces it down (and up) to its most basic form — cubes versus spheres.
Star Trek or no, diplomacy is always about shoving things together until they fit. In this case, the collision of two nebulae started the war between the Cubes and the Orbs. It would take another kind of collision between the two sides to start to bring it to an end.
If the Orbs and the Cubes weren't "creative at all," as Ransom noted, they most definitely provided for an epic battle aboard, and then outside of, ship. Sometimes, thinking outside of the box is the box. The outward simplicity of both species hides what is a rather complex idea in the first place. It is also surely a nod to the Borg who value function over form where no aerodynamics are required.
