8 Ways Star Trek Just Isn't Star Trek Anymore

3. The Serialised Format Can, However, Work To Its Detriment

Star Trek: Discovery is a clever TV show, but one thing that's missing is the procedural nature of classic Star Trek shows. Anyone jumping into Discovery has to go from the very beginning, and while there's an argument that Star Trek could've done with a format change, serialised television isn't the thing you'd exactly associate with the series.

Growing up, Star Trek was totally absorbing because you could, irrespective of where you found the show, get invested in one episodic adventure whenever you felt like doing so. There were multi-episode arcs - certainly - but nothing as intricate as what we've seen with most modern day TV shows, which play more to binge-watching trends and are built largely on the post-Game of Thrones climate the industry currently finds itself in.

With Discovery, there's no way you replicate that feeling. Serialised storytelling is the 'in' thing right now and, no matter where you look - be it TV, comics or otherwise - the decline of the procedural has been laid bare for all to see.

Having a show like Discovery is totally fine, but it's equally true that fans of those older, more procedural Trek shows aren't being catered for right now.
