Those who know their Tolkien lore would have found the meeting between Halbrand and Celebrimbor suspiciously familiar. In The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power, Halbrand became curious about the Mithril stone he saw and instantly gave the master craftsman suggestions to forge it in a way that it could unlock its fullest potential, even in its limited size. All throughout the process of forging Mithril, Halbrand’s ideas became integral.

In the canon of the books, Sauron disguised himself in the form of the Elf called Annatar. He befriended Celebrimbor and gave knowledge and encouragement in the forging of the Rings of Power. The streaming series may have done things differently, but the central idea that Sauron is wearing a trustworthy form to manipulate the Elves to make the rings remains the same. A distilled streamlined version, if you will.

If that was not enough of a clue, Halbrand also called his intriguing suggestion to Celebrimbor as "a gift". By then, his identity as the Dark Lord was all but confirmed, for Annatar was also known as the "Lord of Gifts".
