In one of the season’s pivotal scenes, Halbrand stops the villainous Adar from escaping. In a moment of anger, he was about to kill Adar, only to be stopped by Galadriel because they needed information from him. Halbrand told Galadriel that Adar once caused him great pain in the past. Adar did not remember the Southlander but believed he killed a loved one.

Curiously, just a few minutes later, Adar revealed he was once Sauron’s loyal follower. When he saw how cruel his master was in treating his Orc family, he turned against him and killed him. Since that day, Adar became the Orcs only leader. For centuries he believed Sauron was dead.

The scene implies Adar did not kill Halbrand’s loved ones; he tried to kill Halbrand when he was still his master, Sauron. Adar failed in killing his former master, and now the master is holding a grudge against his former Elf servant. Adar did not recognize him because Sauron now has a human form. Whatever details happened made Sauron go into hiding for centuries, until we found him in the middle of nowhere in the first episode.
