9 Awful TV Characters We're Supposed To Root For

4. Ted Mosby - How I Met Your Mother

Friends Ross and Rachel
20th Television

If the ratings and excessive longevity of this show are to be believed, just about everyone in the world really wanted to know how Ted Mosby met the mother of his children.

But...why? That's a serious question. Why on earth did so many people care about Ted's drawn-out story when Ted Mosby was one of the infuriating protagonists in the history of situational comedy?

As soul-crushingly boring as he is endlessly self-pitying, Ted Mosby's anguished longing is just plain tiring. And desperate. So, so desperate. How is the principle conceit of How I Met Your Mother Ted's desperate search for "the one"? Everyone realizes that the guy's only in his twenties, right?

Ted is the kind of guy who freaks out about not having the career of his dreams straight out of college, or complains that he doesn't own a home in Tokyo, even though he visited the city once on a business trip. He comes off more as an entitled douche than a hopeless romantic. Especially when he cheats on a perfectly lovely girl with his overly-idealized "dream girl."

Just...CALM DOWN, TED! Maybe if you stopped spazzing out about every woman's imperfections and focused on their good qualities, we wouldn't be forced to examine your terrible qualities every episode.
