Daenerys Targeryen was the key figure in Game of Thrones, who along with Jon Snow formed the basis of the story of A Song of Ice and Fire. Her character arc took her from a vulnerable teenager, to a powerful oppressor, but many fans were disappointed in the change her character undertook in the final season, as her hunger for power took on a tyrannical turn.

Daenerys invasion of Kings Landing proved to be fierce and destructive with no thought for the lives she slaughtered, totally ignoring the best efforts that her hand, Tyrion Lannister, had made to orchestrate a more peaceful invasion with the surrender of Cersei’s army. The knowledge that Jon Snow is the true heir to the crown she so desperately wanted ultimately turns her mad and into the villain of the piece, after she had been built up for many series to be the opposite. Initially a liberator of slaves who wanted only the best for the Seven Kingdoms, the dark turn of Daenerys character as a conqueror and a dictator was not a popular finale, as fans were shown her true Targaryen nature of Fire & Blood.

Her death at the hands of Jon in the final episode saw her body being taken away to a final resting place by her faithful dragon, Drogon. However, as we’ve seen before, resurrection from the dead is far from impossible in Game of Thrones. Daenerys still has many devoted followers, and could once again stake a claim and fight for the throne.
