9 Marvel Superheroes Who Desperately Deserve Their Own Netflix Series

Who They Are: The creation of Bill Mantlo and Ed Hannigan, Cloak and Dagger are one of Marvel€™s more relatively low-key superhero duos. They€™re more synonymous with superhero team-ups than solo adventures, but that shouldn€™'t stop the powers that be from putting out a possible series focusing on the pair.

Conceived during the height of the United States€™ self-proclaimed €˜War on Drugs€™, Tyrone Johnston and Tandy Bowen were born on opposite ends of the economic spectrum. They were both, however, mutants, and had their abilities develop as a result of being kidnapped and tested on by a new illegal drug. Johnston had the ability to absorb his foes into the darkness, along with teleportation and physical alteration. Bowen, on the other hand, can create light constructs in a similar vein to Psylocke, and can heal people as well. The two take their combat prowess to the streets of New York, and have tangled with everyone from the X-Men to the Kingpin of Crime himself, Wilson Fisk.

Why They Deserve A Series: The long-gestating show focusing on the pair is now officially coming to Freeform (previously ABC Family), being billed as a 'superhero love story'. I can't help but feel that they're destined for the wrong network however, as social-commentary and controversy will inevitably be consigned to the cutting room floor. Regardless, these characters are due a modern update, but a Netflix series focusing on the ramifications and current debate in respect to the War on Drugs would be a far more interesting place for a comic book show to go.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
