Who They Are: If you were going to trace the evolution of the superhero genre onscreen, chances are you€™d first look towards Richard Donner€™s Superman series, or perhaps even Tim Burton€™s Batman. These two directors of course heralded the start of comic book themed box-office success, but it wasn'€™t until Blade came along when the first signs of superhero dominance became apparent. In many ways, this was the film that kick-started the superhero genre€™s preeminent nature on film.

Blade€™s short-lived commercial reverence was largely owed to the creative talent attached to the first two films, with Wesley Snipes, Guilmero Del Toro and the then up and coming David S. Goyer formulating an entertaining if not plot-hole laden supernatural epic based on one of the Marvel universe€™s most fantastical premises. It could do better though, and, 12 years on from the disastrous Blade: Trinity, now would be as good a time as any to bring back the Daywalker.

Half human, half vampire, Eric Brooks is one of Marvel's most prominent supernatural heroes. He hunts vampires, protects the world, and occasionally collaborates with other heroes - even if his steely resolve can be a bit off-putting at first.

During the '90s comics boom Blade was one of the company's most popular characters. This was helped in no small part to the hero's box-office draw, but since 2004, Blade's popularity has subsided massively.

Why They Deserve A Series: We know that Marvel are at least somewhat interested in the vampire hunter, having been in possession of the character€™s onscreen rights since 2011. Wesley Snipes too seems keen on reprising the role, irrespective of the fact that a Blade series would undoubtedly succeed with or without the actor€™s involvement. Most conversations regarding a potential reboot have presumably made reference to film and film alone, in which case Snipes€™ interest makes perfect sense, but the only place we€™re likely to get a truly gritty and faithful Blade adaptation would be on Netflix.

Vampires and the sort are a tricky thing to synergise with the rest of the MCU, so giving Blade his own little segment of the world to operate in would really be the best thing for the character. Well, unless they€™re going to blend Morbius into the Spidey reboot

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
