9 Most Memorable Alternate Universe TV Episodes
3. Rick & Morty - The Ricklantis Mixup
Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland’s Rick & Morty is an entire series about alternate universes. Its entire premise revolves around travel between infinite worlds where anything is possible. Woven into the fabric of this show is the idea that all of the different Ricks and Mortys, from all of the different possible realities, have banded together on a space station called The Citadel of Ricks. Over the few times that the series visits this place, the audience has seen almost every imaginable permutation of either Rick, Morty, or both. The setting itself does a great job of illustrating the infinite possibilities such a universe would create.
The third season episode, The Ricklantis Mixup, gives the audience a real idea of the scope and consequences of characters that can move freely between alternate realities. While there may be only two templates - Ricks and Mortys - the varied experiences of each individual turn them into very different characters, each with their own agenda, each radically changed by the differences between their universes of origin and those of the people around them.
While most shows tend to focus on a single or small handful of instances of parallel universes, Rick & Morty is really the only show that takes the time to ask the audience to think about the impossible scope of it all.
