9 Most Memorable Alternate Universe TV Episodes

2. Star Trek: TOS - Mirror, Mirror

Rick and Morty The Ricklantis Mixup
CBS

The episode that introduced fans to ‘The Mirror Universe’ saw a transporter accident send Kirk, Scotty, Uhura, and McCoy onto an alternate Enterprise. It doesn’t take long for the displaced characters to realize that something is horribly wrong, and that they will need a plan to get themselves back where they belong.

Like most episodes of early Star Trek, Mirror, Mirror is a morality tale in that it teaches two distinct lessons:

First, that it’s easier for a good man to pretend to be evil than for an evil man to pretend to be good. Where Kirk and Co. succeeded in acting in the roles of their evil counterparts, those doppelgangers who were transported aboard the primary universe’s Enterprise were discovered instantly and imprisoned by Spock before they could do any damage.

Second, the episodes teaches the idea that one man with a clear vision and the bravery to fight for it can make a difference. Kirk, just before leaving the Mirror Universe, stops to speak with the famously goateed Spock. He tells him that he has the ability to save the Terran Empire if he can change their minds about a great many things.

It’s a heavy episode for Star Trek, but well worth the watch.
