The beauty of Nick is that whilst he dreams big, he can scarcely ever be bothered to go about fulfilling these fantasies. One such ambition is to write a best-selling novel, based on a slapdash title (Z is for Zombie) and through engaging in little-to-no outside reading to heighten his vocabulary or uncover any sort of authorial influence. He even once remarks, after scanning over a manuscript from Jess Creative Writing class, "Im a writer. Writers dont read. They write." Astonishingly though, Nick manages to complete an incarnation of his novel in the space of one episode and the end product does not disappoint. Giving the tight structures of Flaubert a run for their money, Z is for Zombie is mostly informed by Postmodernism and metafiction. Ingeniously enclosing a never-ending (it contains no words) word search into the novels confines, Nick plays fast and loose with reader expectation, his wordless word search stressing the incoherence of life and lack of resolution to its problems. Or maybe its just an abysmal and half-baked novel plucked from the brain of someone writing way out of their depth. But hey, at least he uses Palatino.
