Make no bones about it, Nick is one of the most sarcastic people youre every likely to meet. Maybe its a built-in defence mechanism that shelters him from the intimidating spectre of intimacy and personal attachment, but were not here to psychoanalyse. Its clear however, that behind this steely facade resides a genuine person who will go beyond the call of duty for his friends. Most notably Jess. Regardless of any latent amorous feelings, he looks out for her from the day she walks into his life. In the shows pilot, after realising that Apartment 4Ds freshly-single new girl is about to be stood up by one of Schmidts heartless acquaintances, he turns the down the offer of an alcoholic catch-up with his beloved ex Caroline and leads Schmidt and Coach in serenading a depressed Jess with a harmonious and thrilling rendition of (Ive Had) The Time Of My Life. Midway through Season two - fearing that Jess is about to be devoured by a rather creepy Creative Writing student of hers - he risks his own life by infiltrating said madmans mysterious garage to gather clues. And what about the time where he missed his flight home (for the fifth Christmas in a row) to treat an emotional Jess to Candy Cane Lanes enchanting Christmas lights? A thoroughly nice guy and an exemplary friend.
