Nick and Schmidt met as college roommates and proudly formed a bond over being equals (read: losers, geeks) with equal success - or lack thereof - with girls. Beginning as proprietors of scraggy-haired tie-dye looks and inimitable chubbiness, these two outsiders recently commemorated a decade spent living together in a tin-themed shindig where it hit home just how much had changed in ten years. The pair were at each others throats in a war influenced by Schmidts new-found snobbery and Nicks increasing shoddiness. Where a trimmed-down Schmidt had shed his excess weight and clumsiness to become a smooth-talking, suavely-dressed womanising businessman, Nicks own college-dorkery had descended into a perpetual laziness. A clash best symbolised in the extravagant mobile bathrooms Schmidt hires for the party up against Nicks sole rusty and rotten port-a-loo. Its a rich conflict of ideas that forever weaves its way through the series with Nick often looking at his ex equal with scorn, and resenting his personality changes in addition to routinely turning to Schmidt for help in issues of the heart and wardrobe. And it's clear to see how much pleasure Schmidt takes in helping out his best friend. A funny, weird and often heart-warming connection, lets hope it lasts. To TinFinity and beyond!
