9 Star Trek Story Threads Continued In Non-TV Formats
3. Comic Thread - The Menagerie
All of Byrne's Star Trek work was gathered together in a 2013 hardcover volume from IDW Publishing called Star Trek: The John Byrne Collection. It contains stories about Captain Christopher Pike and Captain Robert April (the first captains of the USS Enterprise) along with a character who served as Captain Pike's first office, played by Majel Barrett Roddenberry known only as Number One. We first met Number One in the Star Trek Pilot episode "The Cage" (and later re-named "The Menagerie" and divided into two episodes) and in Byrne's extrapolation, she later rises through the ranks and earns the rank of Commodore. Byrne keeps to the original tradition and maintains her anonymity, so even though we see her promoted, we still never learn her real name. Byrne not only keeps to the spirit of the original series, but even keeps to their traditions. It's Star Trek plain and simple.
