No list of amazing shows that blew viewers away with one season would be complete without mention of Firefly, the American space western drama that was created and directed by Joss Whedon. No programme has been so notably lamented for its lost potential, and even now, over a decade after it first aired in 2002, there are calls from fans to have it resurrected.

Firefly explores the lives of a group of people who fought on the losing side of a civil war, a bunch of renegades brought together by their alienation from society and the state of their contemporary world. The series postulates a future in which only the United States and China are the remaining superpowers, joining together to form a central federal government.

There are a bunch of reasons why people were so blown away by Firefly €“ including its unique premise, fantastic cast (including Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres and Alan Tudyk to name but a few) and strong writing €“ but the main one is simple: the show was just fun. Not only was the action great, but the humour was too, as was the emotional aspect and Firefly's stimulating intellect.
