9 Ups & 3 Downs From Friends: The Reunion
5. The One With All The Banter
There's a defining reason why Friends was as successful as it was; the gang are genuinely friends.
You could tell this as soon as they got back together, as the banter was very much real. Matt LeBlanc poked fun at Courteney Cox for having some of her lines written on the kitchen table at Monica and Chandler's apartment, noting that he erased them before filming commenced to mess with her, while Cox apparently also typically left a script in the sink.
Upon Matthew Perry's arrival, Jennifer Anniston joked about him being the last to arrive, uttering "Could you be any later?", a tremendous joke given Perry's sarcastic persona of Chandler.
Other cast members had, of course, used this as a rib against Chandler in actual Friends episodes, with Tom Selleck's Richard character saying "Could that shot be any prettier?" when playing a game of foosball against Chandler and Joey.
Considering Perry's real-life troubles, this was needed. It broke any tension that may have lingered in the air when he came through the stage door for the first time in seventeen years. Even though the special didn't touch on his addiction, Matthew did mention his mental health issues when filming the series, making this reunion moment far more important than it may seem.
