Doctor Who: 20 Things You Didn’t Know About A Christmas Carol

19. Sardicktown Was Built From Colony Ships

The bulk of the action in A Christmas Carol is set in Sardicktown, named after the powerful Sardick family.

It's not a particularly jolly place, reflective of its miserly owner, with everything seemingly built out of scrap iron and discarded metal – and there's a reason for this.

On the episode of Doctor Who Confidential that accompanied A Christmas Carol, set decorator Julian Luxton explained that the original settlers in Sardicktown arrived via huge ships, which they then broke down and used to build everything.

Whether this was always the plan or not, it adds an additional layer of character to the settlement – its first inhabitants literally built it from the ground up with what little materials they had.
