Doctor Who: The Star Beast Review - 9 Ups And 3 Downs

8. UP - Russell Is Back

Doctor Who The Star Beast David Tennant Fourteenth Doctor

Doctor Who can be a bit make or break dialogue-wise, often straying a little too far into sciency mumbo-jumbo and infodumping, and scrimping on the character work.

We’re pleased to report that, for the most part, The Star Beast was a pleasure to watch in this department. Snappy, genuinely funny dialogue, meaningful character interactions, and just the right amount of callbacks without going overboard – every moment felt true to the characters we knew at the point we left them 15 years ago. No small feat.

Grounded, realistic dialogue that fleshes out the world and characters, and an understanding that not every line needs to move the plot forwards, have always been a strength of Russell’s, and the man certainly hasn’t lost his touch.

Alex is a sci-fi and fantasy swot, and is a writer for WhoCulture. He is incapable of watching TV without reciting trivia, and sometimes, when his heart is in the right place, and the stars are too, he’s worth listening to.
