Doctor Who: Wild Blue Yonder Review - 9 Ups And 2 Downs

7. UP - A Tense Reveal

Doctor Who Wild Blue Yonder

One of the highlights of the episode is the scene where we’re first introduced to the antagonists. What starts off as a quiet scene allowing Donna to voice her worries and eagerness to get home to her family takes a sudden turn as we cut to Fourteen in the other room and realise that whoever or whatever Donna is talking to is not the Doctor.

The episode doesn’t treat this as a shock reveal, there’s no musical sting, and there’s very little attention drawn to it at first, keeping the twist just subtle enough that the audience does a double take.

This sense of unease builds masterfully as the scene progresses, with the Doctor acting mostly normal but just a tad off, to the point where, without context, this wouldn’t be obvious at all, before gradually ramping up the weirdness until we hit the surreal climax of "my arms are too long."

It’s show-not-tell, treating the audience as intelligent, which is very refreshing to see. Top marks.
