The series if very freaking depressing as it is, given the misery constantly inflicted upon the Baudelaires, but this theory makes the tale even more woeful.

It's not just that they're unfortunate, but that all of this has really taken its toll on Violet, Klaus, and Sunny. Racoln on Reddit notes that while the children start off as confident, they''re gradually worn down by all the pain and torment they have to suffer through, and that by the end they seem almost paralysed by it, knowing that they're going to have to keep repeating the same patterns over and over again.

It's suggested here that this is "insanity", although also offers up the idea of depression and PTSD. Again, there are other explanations - namely that the entire series is obviously just a litany of unfortunate events, and deals with the children growing-up, and that they always pick themselves up and go again.

It does however put an interesting spin on the plight of the children, who despite their tender years have suffered more than anyone should in their life, and it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to think that it could take its toll on their mental health.
