Some said that Ricky Gervais' performance in After Life's first season was the beginning of a new era for the comedy veteran, showcasing a completely different side to his talents by highlighting how powerful a performer he is. Those that said it were right.

Once again, he is at the emotional core of the show and once again, he thrives - delivering a nuanced, layered performance as Tony that feels every bit as raw and authentic as it did in the previous season. His on-screen partnerships with Penelope Wilton, Ashley Jensen, Mandeep Dhillon, Roisin Conaty and, of course, Anti the dog are sublime.

Shining in its best moments - and almost always responsible for them - while carrying it through its worst, Gervais is once again a revelation, turning in another award-worthy performance.
