Agents Of SHIELD: 10 Reasons Season 2 Is A Massive Improvement

1. The Doctor

Without a doubt, the best addition to Season 2 has been the introduction of Skye's estranged father, known as the Doctor. Kyle MacLachlan has seized the chance to play a larger than life character, chewing the scenery when required, but also displaying a wonderful nuance and likeability. As with Ward, the viewers are constantly forced to question what they think of him: callous murderer one minute, anguished father the next. The juxtaposition between the Doctor, as Skye's biological father, and Coulson, her surrogate one, has been brilliant and the scenes between the pair have been among the best of this season so far. The Doctor's fury at Coulson killing Whitehall - done to save him! - robbing him of his revenge, and their subsequent fight, was one of the final episode's highlights. MacLachlan plays a character constantly on a knife-edge. The scene where he meets Skye for the first time was electric, the Doctor obviously nervous but also slightly crazy too. When he reaches out a hand to touch a distraught Skye's shoulder, singing a lullaby, it's both touching and deeply disturbing. This is a father who has been planning nibbles and mass murder at the same time and that's what makes him the best thing to happen to Agents Of SHIELD this season.
