Although the S.H.I.E.L.D. team that we know on the show has been specifically created for the series (or, in the case of Coulson, the films first), there is a long and storied history of the organisation from the comics that they could dive into, and it's something they've decided to ignore up to now. Reaching into the source material and handpicking a few agents or such would be a great way of expanding the cast, and making it feel more like something from Marvel. The likes ofContessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine, Clay Quartermaine, Jimmy Woo, and Jasper Sitwell are all high-ranking agents from the history of the comics who could feasibly work on the show. Furthermore, with the confirmation that they're introducing the Secret Warriors next season, and the reveal that Skye is Daisy Johnson/Quake, other characters from that run should also be introduced. Phobos and Yo-Yo Rodriguez would certainly be a start, characters who are very much a big part of that arc, and have powers that could be worked into the show and expand the mythos of it. S.H.I.E.L.D. is a comic book show after all, and it could do with embracing that a little bit more.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
