Agents Of SHIELD: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best
2. Season 5
Following the Agents of HYDRA storyline at the end of the fourth season, which saw the team stuck in the alternate reality of the Framework for much of the arc, where could the show possibly go next? Turns out, into the future! Season five's first half saw the team sent into a future where the Earth had long been destroyed and the last remnants of both humanity and Inhumanity were under the thumb of the Kree, and the second half saw them arrive back in the present, desperate to find a way to prevent that future from happening.
Along the way, they encountered the evil Kree duo of Kasius and Sinara, Fitz and Simmons met their grandson, Deke, and discovered that HYDRA wasn't completely dead, with General Hale working with an alien Confederacy to "save" the Earth from a threat we all know too well now: Thanos. Longtime characters like Daniel Whitehall, Carl Creel, Deathlok, and Lane Hunter all made returns in different ways, the impact the Framework had on Fitz surfaced in the most terrible manner, and the long-awaited arrival of Graviton finally happened, with Glenn Talbot falling victim to further tragedy to become the season's ultimate villain.
And with Coulson's life hanging in the balance the closer the season came to a close, season five felt like - and was constructed to be - an end for the series in case it was not renewed, the show pulling out all the stops as the team's love for one another was put to the test. And though the season ultimately side-stepped being affected by Infinity War, its bittersweet ending, which saw Coulson and May having left the team to spend his final days together and the team setting out to find the frozen Fitz, turned out to be just the finale the show deserved.
