Ahsoka Episode 1 Review - 7 Ups & 2 Downs
1. Up - Thrawn Was Kept Hidden
The overarching narrative of the entire series has seemingly
already been set out. This is about Ahsoka tracking down Grand Admiral Thrawn
and putting a stop to him so as to prevent another war like the one they have
just battled through.
Thrawn himself is one of Star Wars’ greatest ever villains, with a piercingly cool tone and a ruthless nature. The meticulous antagonist played things like a game of chess throughout Rebels, but was able to get violent when he needed to. Needless to say, there is a lot of excitement to see him in live-action, particularly as Lars Mikkelsen will be reprising the role.
It would have been easy for the series to take advantage of this anticipation and give the audience at least a glimpse of him in the first episode, as it did with Ezra, but thankfully there was absolutely nothing. The whole point is that he has been lost for years, and to keep him off-screen will only make that eventual pay-off all the sweeter.
This writer doesn’t think Thrawn’s face should even have been shown in the trailers, his voice would have been enough before finally seeing those evil red eyes a handful of episodes in. Keep him hidden for as long as possible.
