Amazon's Lord Of The Rings: 10 Crucial Second Age Events It Must Include

4. The Downfall Of Númenor

Basically the Red Wedding of Amazon's Middle-earth show, this is the grand, bloody and violent moment toward which all of the early seasons, all of the political plotting, backstabbings and back-and-forth will have been building.

The wrath of the gods responding to Ar-Pharazôn's "invasion" of the undying lands by wiping out his entire island kingdom in a giant tidal wave could be like nothing ever seen before on TV.

The Downfall of Númenor has the potential to be a spectacular climactic episode to a season of Amazon's show, the perfect justification of their enormous budget. Part-Pompeii, part-Atlantis, part Game Of Thrones's never actually depicted Doom of Valyria, the Downfall of Númenor is a fantasy disaster movie story for an epic fantasy world.

It would also represent a climax to the personal stories of Pharazôn and Tar-Míriel, the show's initial leads; with Pharazôn buried in a giant, divine avalanche, trapped in the Caves of the Forgotten until Middle-earth Doomsday, Sauron so destroyed that he can never again change physical form, and Míriel climbing to the top of Meneltarma, Númenor's highest mountain and home to the island's most sacred spot, before also being swamped by the giant wave.

The show could, of course, end at this climactic moment, but it would be a bit of a downer ending, so expect another season or two to bring us up to a full-on Lord Of The Rings prequel.
