Amazon's Lord Of The Rings: 10 Crucial Second Age Events It Must Include
2. The Realms In Exile
Elendil and family arriving in Middle-earth sets in motion the narrative of the final years of the Second Age, and along with it the climactic seasons and episodes of Amazon's show: those parts of it that become more explicitly a prequel to and setup for the events to come in The Lord Of The Rings.
Much of this will inevitably involve establishing some of the things that will become familiar to fans, not least Elendil and his sons' new kingdoms.
In the north of Middle-earth, Elendil founds the kingdom of Arnor, where many years later the hobbits will settle in what becomes known as The Shire. Meanwhile, in the south, Isildur and his brother Anárion found the kingdom of Gondor, built around the towering cities of Minas Ithil (the tower of the moon) and Minas Anor (the tower of the sun).
This is where the no-longer-prettified Sauron comes back into the frame, surviving the destruction of his body, returning to Mordor and rising up again with a serious grudge against the surviving Faithful Númenóreans.
He captures Minas Ithil, turning it into the Minas Morgul (the tower of sorcery) that Lord Of The Rings fans will remember, and forcing Isildur to flee. The remaining tower city, Minas Anor, is renamed Minas Tirith (the tower of the guard) and everything is set in place for a story and locales that people will start to recognise.
