Sauron Lord of the Rings
tolkien

There are many artistic decisions one can make from the texts of Tolkien's books. After all, whatever you conjure in your mind's eye from reading his words had its own validity.

What the author did give us, though, is his exquisitely drawn maps, which show us the intricate layout of his Middle Earth. The incorporation of these into Jackson's films was very well done indeed. From the documents scrabbled through by Gandalf, to Bilbo's enviable handwriting skills for his There and Back Again: A Hobbit's Tale by Bilbo Baggins, all was in keeping with Tolkien's stylised typography and linework.

For something to look authentically Middle Earth like, it seems that you can't go wrong with honouring these original designs.

Let's not forget, this prequel series may well delve into previously unknown lands and territories - we may well need those maps just to keep track of new destinations.
