Amazon's Lord Of The Rings: Fan-Casting Every (Possible) Major Role
11. Pippin Took - Robbie Kay
Pippin is one of the most deceptively complicated roles in Tolkien's mythology. A younger Pippin would benefit from an actor who knows how to dig deep into the misunderstood hobbit's psyche. Robbie Kay flourishes in his television roles, delivering complex identities for his troubled boy characters.
Viewers should be familiar with Kay after his stand-out part as Peter Pan in Once Upon A Time. As the bitter lad who refuses to age, Kay gives Pan an intricate representation full of anger, misery, and dark humor. Unhappy with his lot in life, Pan makes moves to secure a better future for himself.
Even though Pippin retains his altruistic traits in the films, he's a rebellious personality who acts on his own accord at times. The hobbit makes silly mistakes yet he's the catalyst for some of the story's pivotal moments. Pippin uses his voice and courage to save the lives of others, mirroring Kay's Tommy on Heroes Reborn. The flawed Tommy stumbles but his heart never wavers. Kay should offer an equally profound rendering of Pippin's first failures and successes.
Pippin's a fan favorite thanks to an impressive performance by Billy Boyd. It's interesting that the clumsy halfling eventually becomes a knight of Gondor yet there isn't enough screentime to cover his future career. In the spin-off, Kay would have room to embellish the start of Pippin's trek from foolish Took to hero.
If Pippin receives his proper due, Robbie Kay could grant audiences an alternative view of the youngest of Frodo's friends.
